Ukraine Intensifies Drone Campaign Against Russian Shipping in Black Sea

Ukraine has significantly escalated its drone campaign in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, systematically targeting Russian shipping in a bid to isolate the Crimean peninsula and disrupt Moscow's war effort. A specialized drone unit, operating from undisclosed locations in southern Ukraine, reports hitting more than 180 vessels and other maritime targets over the past three weeks, according to a Reuters report.

A New Front to Isolate Crimea

The attacks represent a strategic widening of the conflict, focusing on the naval supply lines that support Russian forces. The unit, known as "Magyar’s Birds," is part of a broader Ukrainian effort to raise the cost of Russia's occupation of Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

This Ukrainian offensive is part of a growing duel in the strategic waters. Russia has simultaneously intensified its own attacks on Ukrainian ports and international cargo ships. Kyiv's agriculture minister stated that the Russian strikes led shipowners to temporarily suspend vessel arrivals at Ukraine's Black Sea ports, which are critical for agricultural exports.

Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian strike on a Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel carrying corn from Odesa killed 10 sailors. In the first half of July, Russia struck Ukrainian ports 23 times and civilian vessels 17 times, according to Kyiv's seaports authority. Russia has maintained that its strikes are aimed at infrastructure storing military cargo and fuel.
