UK Stocks Rise as Strong Retail Sales Offset Geopolitical Concerns

The UK's FTSE 100 index advanced on Friday, as unexpectedly strong domestic retail sales data helped investors look past mounting geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran.
As of 7:27 AM GMT, the FTSE 100 was up 0.32%. Elsewhere in Europe, Germany’s DAX gained 0.88% while France’s CAC 40 added 0.23%.
Domestic Strength Boosts London Markets
A key driver for the positive sentiment was a surprisingly robust report on the UK consumer. The Office for National Statistics reported that retail sales volumes rose 1.0% in June, directly confounding economists' expectations for a 0.3% decline.
On an annual basis, sales growth reached 4.2%, significantly outpacing forecasts of 2.3%. The statistics agency attributed the strong performance to increased spending on items like air conditioning and clothing amid warmer weather and purchases related to the World Cup. The positive data also supported the pound, with the GBP/USD pair rising 0.20% to 1.3341.
Geopolitical Tensions Cap Gains
The market's gains were tempered by a tense geopolitical backdrop. U.S. Central Command confirmed it had carried out its 13th consecutive night of military strikes against Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported explosions across several provinces.
AdAdding to investor concerns, Axios reported that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a major offensive against Iran. This follows a U.S. House vote on Thursday to restrict the president's authority for further strikes without congressional approval, a measure the Senate rejected. Separately, a new wave of U.S. tariffs on 60 trading partners, including China and the European Union, took effect on Friday.
Market Snapshot
In commodity markets, oil prices fell sharply amid the complex geopolitical signals. Brent crude futures dropped 1.92% to $98.76 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 1.83% to $90.47.
In UK corporate news:
- discoverIE Group reported a strong first quarter, with organic orders up 31%, and said it was on track to beat full-year earnings expectations.
- Reckitt Benckiser announced an agreement to divest its Russian hygiene business, anticipating a post-tax loss of approximately £175 million from the exit.
