Treasury Yields Climb as Markets Brace for Hawkish Fed Minutes

U.S. Treasury yields climbed on Tuesday as bond markets braced for the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting, with investors anticipating details that could reinforce a hawkish monetary policy stance.
Bond Market on Edge
The selling pressure in fixed-income assets pushed yields, which move inversely to prices, higher across the board. Key market movements included:
- The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 4.49%.
- The policy-sensitive two-year Treasury yield increased to 4.13%.
This defensive positioning comes despite a weaker-than-expected jobs report from earlier in the week, which showed the U.S. economy added just 57,000 jobs in June, well below the consensus estimate of 115,000. The market's current focus on the Fed's upcoming communication is overriding the impact of that softer economic data.
All Eyes on the Fed
AdThe primary driver for the rise in yields is the scheduled publication of the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) June 16–17 meeting. This will be the first detailed account of the policy discussion under the leadership of newly appointed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
While the FOMC held the federal funds rate steady at 3.50%–3.75% last month, the accompanying Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) surprised investors with a distinctly hawkish tone, setting the stage for heightened scrutiny of the forthcoming minutes.
Global Yields Also Rise
The trend was not isolated to the U.S. In the Eurozone, the yield on the benchmark German 10-year bund was also up, trading at 2.948%. European bonds faced pressure after a Sentix index reading showed a stronger-than-expected rebound in investor confidence for July, reducing the appeal of safe-haven government debt.
Adding to the pressure, European Central Bank (ECB) policymaker Fabio Panetta warned that central banks in the region face long-term political pressure to absorb larger government deficits, according to remarks made at an industry event.
