Background

Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin, added 14 metric tons of physical gold to its reserves during the second quarter, bringing its total holdings to more than 146 metric tons. The purchase marks a significant acceleration in the company's acquisition of the precious metal to back its digital tokens.

Q2 Reserve Update

In a statement covering its April-June results, Tether confirmed the expansion of its gold reserves, which are a component of the assets backing its USDT stablecoin. As of the end of June, the company's gold holdings supporting USDT were valued at $18.8 billion.

"We remained one of the world’s largest buyers of U.S. Treasuries, reduced secured lending by $2.38 billion, and added 14 tons of physical gold," said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino in the statement. The company's purchase in the second quarter more than doubled the 6 tons it acquired in the first quarter of the year.

Strategic Timing and Profitability

The increased gold purchases coincided with a notable downturn in the commodity's price. According to the source report, gold experienced its sharpest quarterly decline since 2013 during the second quarter, falling 14%. This suggests Tether may have capitalized on lower prices to bolster its holdings.

Alongside its asset diversification, Tether reported a strong financial performance, posting a net operating profit of $1.50 billion for the quarter. Ardoino attributed the profit primarily to the performance of its U.S. Treasury portfolio and repo activities.

Context for Investors

Tether's reserves are critical for maintaining the stability of its tokens. The company's primary product, the USDT stablecoin, has $183.7 billion worth of tokens in circulation and aims to maintain a 1-to-1 peg with the U.S. dollar by holding equivalent assets in reserve, such as U.S. Treasury bills and gold.

The company also issues the Tether Gold (XAUT) token, which is fully backed by physical gold and has $2.9 billion in circulation. The continuous addition of physical assets like gold is part of Tether's strategy to enhance the transparency and resilience of its reserve portfolio.
