Tech Investor Positioning Drops to Six-Month Low, Deutsche Bank Reports

Investor positioning in the technology sector has declined to its lowest level in six months, signaling a significant cooling of sentiment toward the market-leading group, according to a recent report from Deutsche Bank.
Strategists led by Parag Thatte noted that overall equity positioning has fallen to a neutral stance, driven by a notable retreat from tech.
Shifting Sector Allocations
The report highlights that tech positioning is now approaching levels last seen during periods of heightened geopolitical tension. While exposure to technology has fallen, positioning in most other market sectors reportedly increased last week, though they generally remain at neutral or underweight levels.
Energy stands out as the only sector with investor positioning that is modestly above neutral, according to the bank's analysis. This suggests a broader rotation may be underway as investors reassess their sector allocations.
Contrasting Investor Flows
Despite the pullback in positioning, the recent tech selloff has also attracted opportunistic buying. Deutsche Bank's team reported that the downturn triggered $30 billion in inflows into technology funds over the past two weeks.
AdA significant portion of these inflows, $12 billion, was directed specifically toward leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs), indicating that some traders are making aggressive bets on a rebound. However, the strategists also noted that weakness in the sector last Thursday prompted immediate outflows on that day.
A Divergence in Strategy
The bank's research points to a split in market behavior:
- Discretionary investor positioning has fallen to its lowest level in more than a month.
- Systematic strategies, in contrast, saw their positioning decrease last week but remain in overweight territory.
This divergence suggests that while human fund managers are growing more cautious, automated or rules-based trading systems have not yet fully unwound their exposure to equities.
