Bayer Shares Climb on Positive Cancer Drug Data and China Approval for Xarelto Successor

Bayer AG (BAYGn) shares surged on Monday, buoyed by two significant positive developments in its pharmaceutical pipeline. The company announced encouraging interim trial data for its prostate cancer drug Nubeqa and secured the first marketing approval for its next-generation stroke-prevention compound, Asundexian.
Pipeline Progress Fuels Rally
Bayer disclosed interim results from its Phase III DASL-HiCaP trial for the prostate cancer treatment Nubeqa. The company reported that the drug, when used with hormone-deprivation therapy, reduced the risk of metastasis or death by 58% compared to a placebo after a median follow-up of nearly four years.
Adding to the positive momentum, Chinese regulators granted the first global marketing approval for Asundexian. The compound is a key part of Bayer's cardiovascular pipeline and is being developed as the successor to its blockbuster anticoagulant, Xarelto.
Market Reaction and Analyst View
The dual announcements sent Bayer's stock up 3.2% to trade at €45.35 during the session, placing it at the top of Germany's benchmark DAX index. The move represents a significant recovery from the stock's 52-week low of €25.82, though it remains below its high of €53.98.
AdDespite the market's enthusiasm, some analysts offered a more measured perspective. Jefferies analyst Michael Leuchten maintained his "Hold" rating and a €46 price target on the stock. In a note, he characterized the Nubeqa trial results as encouraging but largely in line with prior expectations rather than a paradigm shift for the treatment.
Broader Context
Bayer's gains came amid a supportive backdrop for the broader pharmaceutical sector, with peers such as Sanofi, Novartis, and Pfizer also advancing. The combination of pivotal clinical data and a key regulatory milestone distinguished Bayer's performance.
Investors appear to be pricing in an improving narrative for the company's drug pipeline ahead of its third-quarter earnings report, which is scheduled for early November.
