Taiwan Tech Sales Diverge as AI Strength Contrasts With PC, Smartphone Weakness

Taiwanese technology firms reported mixed sales results for August 2026, highlighting a significant divergence in the electronics market where robust demand for artificial intelligence components is propping up the sector while sales related to personal computers and smartphones are faltering.
An analysis from Raymond James indicates that while the technology supply chain shows overall strength, a clear split has emerged between high-growth AI segments and weakening consumer-facing markets.
Market Growth Shows Signs of Moderating
Across the board, growth appears to be slowing from its earlier pace this year. For the first two months of the third quarter, 74% of Taiwanese tech vendors reported growth exceeding their five-year seasonal average. According to Raymond James, this is a notable decrease from the 87% of vendors who reported above-seasonal growth in both the first and second quarters of 2026.
Semiconductor sales remained strong overall, but showed signs of weakness in segments exposed to the PC and mobile markets. Similarly, memory sales continued to grow but at a slower rate, with sequential revenue growth for tracked vendors at 51% for the first two months of Q3, down from 60% in Q2 and 69% in Q1.
AI and Cloud Demand Accelerates
AdSuppliers of components for cloud and AI servers reported particularly strong results. All vendors in this category showed better-than-seasonal growth, an improvement from 75% in the second quarter and 50% in the first.
One standout performer was ASIC design firm Alchip, which saw its adjusted sequential quarterly growth surge by 299%. This represents a more than threefold increase compared to its already strong 82% growth in the second quarter, underscoring the intense demand for specialized AI hardware.
PC and Smartphone Segments Weaken
The consumer electronics sector is facing increasing headwinds. Approximately 51% of PC-exposed vendors reported sales below seasonal trends in August. This marks a sharp reversal from the first quarter of 2026, when all such vendors had reported above-average seasonal growth.
Smartphones also displayed weakness, with 57% of exposed vendors reporting below-seasonal trends through the first two months of Q3, a significant increase from 29% in Q2. The analysis suggests this is partly due to a strategic shift in resource allocation, as tight memory supply is being prioritized for high-demand server and AI data center deployments, a trend recently noted in earnings commentary from major firms like AMD, Intel, and Arm Holdings.
