Background

Suedzucker AG (SZUG) raised its full-year revenue forecast after reporting a significant increase in first-quarter operating profit, driven by cost improvements in its sugar division and stronger pricing in its ethanol business. The positive earnings signal that the company's strategy is beginning to offset persistent weakness in its core sugar market.

First-Quarter Performance

For the three months ending in June, the German food group announced a substantial jump in operating earnings. The results highlight a divergence between profitability and sales.

  • Operating EBITDA: Climbed approximately 41% year-over-year to €135 million.
  • Revenue: Slipped roughly 4% from the prior year to approximately €2.1 billion.

Management attributed the stronger profitability to lower costs within its sugar segment and higher prices for ethanol produced by its CropEnergies unit. The decline in revenue was primarily due to reduced volumes and softer pricing in the sugar business.

In response to the strong start to its fiscal year, Suedzucker lifted its sales guidance. The company now expects full-year revenue in a range of €8.1 billion to €8.5 billion, an increase from its previous forecast of €8.0 billion to €8.4 billion.

However, the company maintained its full-year EBITDA guidance band of €480 million to €680 million. Suedzucker noted that geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty continues to complicate its forward-looking visibility, but also reported favorable sugar beet development across most of its growing regions as of early June, a positive sign for the upcoming harvest.

Investor Takeaway

The first-quarter results provide the first concrete evidence that cost discipline and strength in the company's diversified segments are effectively counteracting the headwinds from lower sugar prices and volumes. For investors, the earnings beat and upwardly revised revenue forecast offer a fundamental basis for a potential recovery, demonstrating resilience in a challenging market.
