SpaceX, AST Spacemobile Reportedly Eye $6 Billion Spectrum Licenses
Text size
Background

SpaceX and AST Spacemobile Inc. have reportedly shown interest in acquiring a set of spectrum licenses from Grain Management LLC valued at $6 billion, according to a Bloomberg report. However, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk responded to the report in a social media post, stating it was "not true."

Details of the Spectrum Auction

The licenses in question are in the 800 MHz-band, considered highly valuable for providing wireless phone services directly from satellites to consumer devices. These assets became available after the private equity firm Grain Management finalized a spectrum swap with T-Mobile US Inc. earlier this month.

As part of that transaction's approval, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that Grain Management must seek bids for the spectrum. In its order, the commission described the spectrum as "underutilized" and stipulated that a bidding process must be completed by a deadline of November 5.

Market Context

The potential acquisition highlights the growing competition in the direct-to-device satellite communications market. A successful bid for this spectrum would significantly advance a company's ability to offer mobile services in areas with no terrestrial cell coverage.

For SpaceX, the move would align with the aggressive expansion of its Starlink satellite communications division, which is a key revenue driver for the company. Both SpaceX and AST Spacemobile are major players developing next-generation satellite networks, making them logical potential bidders for such strategic assets.
