Background

The South Korean won led losses among major Asian currencies on Monday, pressured by rising oil prices, as the U.S. dollar edged higher ahead of key inflation data. The Japanese yen also weakened, surrendering a portion of the gains it made following recent currency market intervention.

Won and Yen Under Pressure

The won was the region's weakest-performing currency in early trade, with the USD/KRW pair rising 0.54% to 1,415.05, according to Investing.com data. The currency faced headwinds from a rise in Brent crude prices toward $84 a barrel. South Korea's status as a major energy importer makes the won particularly sensitive to higher fuel costs.

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen resumed its downward trend, with the USD/JPY pair climbing 0.30% to 158.27. The move reverses some of the yen's recent strength, which was triggered by a coordinated U.S.-Japan intervention. The yen's slide highlights the persistent pressure from wide interest rate differentials between the U.S. and Japan, a fundamental factor that intervention struggles to overcome.

Market Focus Shifts to U.S. Inflation

The U.S. dollar saw a modest rebound after recent weakness, with the U.S. Dollar Index rising 0.18% to 99.72. The dollar's recent slide was prompted by a weak U.S. jobs report on Friday, which saw markets reduce the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September to roughly 44%, down from 67% a week prior.

With the labor market data absorbed, investors are now squarely focused on Wednesday's U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. The release is seen as the next major test for markets and will provide fresh insight into the inflationary environment, heavily influencing the Fed's upcoming policy decisions.

In other regional trading, the Australian dollar also slipped, with the AUD/USD pair falling 0.14% to $0.7058 ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's policy meeting on Tuesday, where it is widely expected to hold interest rates steady.
