Background

Shares in Shoe Zone PLC (LSE:SHOE) plunged by more than 20% on Tuesday after the value footwear retailer announced it swung to a full-year loss, suspended its dividend, and issued a cautious outlook. The sell-off was intensified by the conclusion of a share buyback program that had previously supported the stock's price.

Swing to Loss and Dividend Suspension

In a pre-market trading update for the 53 weeks ending October 3, 2026, Shoe Zone reported an adjusted pre-tax loss of approximately £1.0 million. This marks a significant deterioration from the £2.4 million profit recorded in the prior year.

The company stated that total revenue declined by 4.5% to £142.4 million, down from £149.1 million a year earlier. Management attributed the weaker sales to operating 18 fewer stores and a decline in consumer confidence amid general negativity in the UK economy. Profitability was further impacted by the full-year effect of a National Insurance increase and a rise in the National Living Wage. Consequently, the company confirmed that no dividend would be paid for the full year.

Market Reaction and Buyback Conclusion

Investors reacted swiftly to the negative update, with the company's stock falling by as much as 23.4% in early trading. The sharp decline was compounded by the formal completion of Shoe Zone's share repurchase program.

The buyback, which had been active since August 2026, had removed over 1.1 million shares from the market, providing a consistent source of demand. Its conclusion removed what the market viewed as a support level for the stock, leaving it more exposed to the negative sentiment following the trading update.

Cautious Outlook and Headwinds

Looking forward, Shoe Zone's management warned that trading conditions are expected to remain subdued. The company noted that the start of the Autumn/Winter season has been slower than expected, with that weakness extending into the new financial year.

The retailer is also monitoring several external pressures that could negatively impact future trading, including:

  • Rising container shipping prices
  • A weakening British pound against the U.S. dollar
  • Higher fuel costs

The company's challenges come amid a broader risk-off mood in the market, as investors turn cautious ahead of the UK's Autumn Budget and a forthcoming policy decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
