Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced a new lineup of foldable smartphones, increasing prices on two key models by $100 as the company navigates rising memory chip costs and prepares for heightened competition in the niche market it pioneered.

The South Korean tech giant is balancing component price pressures with the strategic need to defend its leadership in the foldable category, particularly as analysts expect competitor Apple to enter the segment this year.

New Lineup and Pricing Strategy

At a launch event in London, Samsung unveiled three Galaxy Z models powered by Alphabet's Gemini artificial intelligence. The new pricing structure reflects the challenging cost environment:

  • A new passport-sized Galaxy Z Fold8, featuring a wider screen for video consumption, was introduced at $1,899.
  • The premium Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra saw its price increase by $100 to $2,099.
  • The popular clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip8 also received a $100 price hike, now costing $1,199.

Analysts note that surging memory chip prices are squeezing profit margins for Samsung's mobile division, even as they benefit its semiconductor business. According to data from Omdia, memory and storage can account for over 30% of the material costs in premium smartphones.

This launch is considered critical for Samsung as it faces the prospect of a new foldable iPhone from Apple. "Strategically, this is one of Samsung’s most important foldable launches," said Francisco Jeronimo, vice president at researcher IDC, in a statement to Reuters. "Samsung has to defend the category it created, and that’s why it cannot play it safe."

While premium devices have more room to absorb rising component costs, analysts question if hardware updates alone can justify the higher prices. "A bigger screen alone is no longer enough," noted Sheng Win Chow, a senior analyst at Omdia.

Diverging Market Outlook

Despite pressures, the foldable segment remains a bright spot in an otherwise contracting smartphone market. IDC forecasts that while the overall global smartphone market is set to shrink by a record 14% in 2026, shipments of foldable phones are projected to grow by 20%.

This growth potential underscores the importance of Samsung's strategy to maintain its dominance. The new Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra models will be powered by the latest Qualcomm processor, while the Flip8 will use a Qualcomm or Samsung Exynos chip depending on the region.
