Background

The World Foundation, the organization managing the digital identity and financial network co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has completed the first close of a $52.5 million funding round. The capital was raised through a sale of its WLD tokens to strategic investors, according to a recent announcement.

The Transaction

The financing was led by prominent venture capital firm Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto, and other investors. The World Foundation stated that all WLD tokens sold in this round are subject to a 12-month lock-up period.

The funds are earmarked to promote the global adoption of its World ID technology among organizations, consumers, and their AI agents. The project, formerly known as Worldcoin, aims to provide a decentralized method for verifying human identity online.

'Proof of Personhood' in the AI Era

World's core product, the World ID, is pitched as a "digital passport" that allows users to prove they are a real human, not an AI bot. This is achieved by scanning a user's iris with a proprietary device called the "Orb" in exchange for a digital identity and WLD tokens.

Investors see a growing need for this technology as artificial intelligence becomes more pervasive. "As AI continues to accelerate, the need for ‘proof of personhood’ is becoming increasingly urgent," said Cosmo Jiang, a General Partner at Pantera Capital. The foundation argues that without such verification, online systems like advertising models, dating apps, and voting platforms could be compromised by synthetic accounts.

Background and Challenges

Despite its ambitious goals, the project has faced significant scrutiny and has been temporarily banned in some countries over privacy concerns related to its collection of biometric iris data.

Still, the World Foundation reports considerable user growth, claiming that over 39 million people have joined the World Network. Of those, more than 18 million have completed the in-person Orb verification, and the network's World ID has been used for verification over 475 million times.
