Rigetti Computing Stock Jumps on Finalized $100 Million CHIPS Act Award

Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) stock climbed 5.7% in pre-market trading after the company announced it has finalized a $100 million award from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act.
Government Funding Solidified
The company signed a definitive agreement that converts a previously announced Letter of Intent from May into a binding commitment. This removes uncertainty around the funding, which is designated to accelerate research and development in superconducting quantum computing.
The award, granted to Rigetti's subsidiary Rigetti & Co, LLC, will support three key R&D initiatives aimed at overcoming significant hurdles in scaling quantum systems:
- Miniaturizing and integrating readout electronics.
- Expanding cryogenic capacity with new cryostat architecture.
- Developing advanced fabrication for high-connectivity chip designs.
As a condition of the award, the Department of Commerce will receive a minority, non-controlling equity stake in Rigetti. This arrangement signals a deep, long-term alignment between the U.S. government and the company's technological roadmap.
AdCompetitive Landscape Shifts
Rigetti CEO Dr. Subodh Kulkarni stated that the government's selection provides an opportunity to deliver large-scale quantum computers to American researchers more quickly. The news validates the company's approach in a highly competitive and capital-intensive field.
Adding a tailwind for the sector, Japanese technology firm NEC announced it was halting all development of gate-based quantum hardware, citing long timelines to commercial viability. The exit of a significant international competitor is seen by investors as a positive development for U.S.-based quantum hardware companies like Rigetti.
Rigetti's sharp upward move stood in contrast to the broader market, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average trading lower. This underscores that the stock's performance was driven by company-specific catalysts rather than general market sentiment.
