Qantas Ground Workers to Strike Next Week Over Pay and Conditions

Hundreds of Qantas ground workers will conduct a 24-hour strike next week amid an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) announced on Friday. The industrial action is set to affect the airline's freight handling operations and its QantasLink regional services.
Details of the Strike
The work stoppage is scheduled to occur for a 24-hour period, beginning on Wednesday in the state of Victoria and on Thursday in the rest of Australia, the union said in a statement. The strike involves ground staff who handle critical freight operations and support the carrier's regional flight network.
TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine placed the responsibility for any service interruptions squarely on the airline. "Workers do not take this action lightly," Kaine said. "Any disruption to freight, including Australia Post shipments, sits solely at the feet of Qantas management and its brutal disregard for customers and the workforce."
AdContext of Labor Tensions
This industrial action follows a period of strained labor relations at the Australian flag carrier. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Qantas outsourced the jobs of more than 1,800 ground workers, a move that was later ruled illegal by a court.
As a result of that ruling, a court ordered the airline last year to pay a record fine of A$90 million (approximately $64 million). A spokesperson for Qantas did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the upcoming strike, according to Reuters.
