Text size
Background

Shares of Prime Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ:PRME) rose over 11% on Wednesday following the company's victory in a binding arbitration case against Beam Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:BEAM). Conversely, shares of Beam Therapeutics declined by more than 5%. The dispute centered on the development rights for PM647, an investigational treatment for a genetic disorder.

An arbitration tribunal determined that the treatment, PM647, falls within Prime Medicine’s designated field of development as defined by a 2019 collaboration and license agreement between the two companies. The ruling affirmed that Prime Medicine did not breach the agreement and is not liable for any monetary damages to Beam Therapeutics.

PM647 is being developed for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), a genetic condition that can lead to severe lung and liver disease. The therapy uses Prime Medicine's technology to correct the most common disease-causing mutation in the SERPINA1 gene. AATD affects an estimated 200,000 people across the United States and European Union, and there are currently no approved disease-modifying or curative treatments for the condition.

With the legal dispute resolved, Prime Medicine plans to advance PM647 into clinical trials. The company intends to submit an application for clinical trials in the third quarter of 2026, with the first clinical data anticipated in 2027. According to Prime Medicine, studies in humanized mouse models have shown high editing efficiency at clinically relevant doses.
