Background

The British pound slipped against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, pressured by a broad-based strengthening of the greenback fueled by rising energy costs and higher long-term Treasury yields. The move saw the GBP/USD pair fall 0.11% to 1.3529, according to market data.

Dollar Finds Dual Support

The U.S. dollar found support from two key factors, causing the DXY dollar index to rebound from a low of 99.40, according to analysis from ING. Analysts pointed to a combination of market dynamics that have traders hesitant to bet against the greenback.

  • Energy Prices: A rise in oil and natural gas prices, reportedly linked to geopolitical tensions, has been described as a "dollar positive," according to ING. This is attributed to U.S. energy independence and the potential for the Federal Reserve to react to inflationary pressures.
  • Treasury Yields: A sell-off in long-dated government bonds, particularly the 30-year Treasury, also lent support to the dollar. Analysts suggest this is driven more by record U.S. investment-grade corporate bond issuance, which reached $145 billion in August, rather than by fiscal concerns.

Sterling Pressured by Domestic Data

Adding to the pound's weakness were domestic factors that suggest the Bank of England has little reason to pursue tighter monetary policy. Recent U.K. jobs figures were described by ING’s economists as "unremarkable," showing a cool labor market with minimal wage pressures.

This subdued economic picture "suggests little impetus for the Bank of England to hike rates this year," according to the analysis. The euro also firmed modestly against the pound, with EUR/GBP biased toward the 0.8570/80 range ahead of U.K. inflation data due Wednesday.

Market Outlook

Investors are now looking ahead to a series of key economic releases that could influence central bank policy. For the U.S., traders are watching July's Producer Price Index (PPI), weekly jobs data, and industrial production figures, with the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes due on Wednesday.

The recent market moves have slightly increased investor pricing for a September Federal Reserve rate hike. Meanwhile, the euro also eased against the dollar, with EUR/USD slipping 0.06% to 1.1573 as its recent rally stalled.
