Pound Sterling Holds Steady Near One-Month Low as Traders Await Fed Rate Decision

The British pound was little changed against the dollar on Wednesday as investors refrained from making significant moves ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's highly anticipated interest rate decision. The currency pair hovered near its weakest point in almost a month, with market participants also looking ahead to the Bank of England's policy meeting on Thursday.
As of 06:52 ET, the GBP/USD pair was trading flat at 1.3289, according to data from Investing.com. In parallel, the euro also showed minimal movement, with EUR/USD slightly lower at 1.1384.
Fed Decision in Focus
The dollar has found support from what one analyst called "precautionary positioning for a potential surprise Fed hike," according to a note from Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING. This caution has persisted despite softer U.S. consumer confidence data and a recent decline in oil prices.
Markets are currently pricing in a 25-30% probability of an interest rate increase. However, the consensus expectation is for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to hold rates steady. Analysts will be closely watching the vote split for signs of future policy direction.
Potential Market Scenarios
AdThe prevailing view anticipates that the Fed will maintain its current policy, with two members, Lorie Logan and Beth Hammack, likely dissenting in favor of a hike. According to ING, this outcome would likely trigger an "unwinding of precautionary USD positioning," putting downward pressure on the dollar.
"Unless Fed Chair Kevin Warsh surprises with a hawkish spin, or we see more than two dissenters, we think the dollar will come under pressure today," Pesole stated. He suggested a dovish hold could see the dollar index test the 101.0 level by the end of the week. Conversely, a more hawkish tone or a greater number of dissents would likely keep the dollar supported, delaying any potential recovery for the pound and euro.
Broader Currency Outlook
For the euro, ING's analysis suggests a modest dovish surprise from the Fed could push the EUR/USD pair into the 1.1400-1.1450 range in the coming days. However, the bank noted that a sustainable move higher would require both a dovish repricing from the Fed and a stabilization in broader market risk sentiment.
Geopolitical factors, including renewed military activity in the Gulf and turmoil in the semiconductor sector, were also cited as potential headwinds that could cap gains for risk-sensitive currencies like the euro and the pound.
