Pound Sterling Flat as Stronger U.S. Yields Support Dollar Ahead of Jackson Hole

The British pound held steady against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, as rising U.S. Treasury yields provided broad support for the greenback. Currency markets remained subdued as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the highly anticipated Jackson Hole economic symposium later this week.
As of 7:00 AM ET, the GBP/USD pair was trading at 1.3634, down a marginal 0.01% for the session. The euro also edged lower, with the EUR/USD pair down 0.01% to 1.1663.
Dollar Strength Dominates Quiet Market
The primary driver in foreign exchange markets was the U.S. dollar, which found support from a firming in the U.S. bond market. "The dollar continues to follow the U.S. bond market, and a good performance at the long-end of the curve has offered some support to the currency," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, in a note on Tuesday.
Pesole described the start to the week for developed market currencies as "rather quiet," with traders largely awaiting the next major catalyst. The main focus is the Federal Reserve's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where investors will be looking for any new signals on monetary policy.
Sterling Follows Broader Trends
AdThe pound's price action was largely dictated by the dollar's dynamics rather than domestic UK fundamentals. Analysts at ING noted that a light economic calendar in the United Kingdom over the next few weeks points to a continued environment of low volatility for sterling.
The bank also reiterated its view that the Bank of England will not raise interest rates this year. It considers current market pricing, which implies 32 basis points of monetary tightening by the end of the year, to be "still too hawkish."
Outlook and Key Data
Before the Jackson Hole event, investors will be watching for the release of U.S. consumer confidence and housing market data on Tuesday for short-term direction. In Europe, Germany's Ifo business climate index is also due.
ING's analysis suggests the dollar's risks are "skewed to the downside" but that the currency will likely consolidate ahead of the symposium. For the euro, the bank's model indicates a short-term fair value for EUR/USD slightly below 1.160, making a significant rally above 1.170 unlikely in the near term.
