Background

The British pound edged lower against the U.S. dollar on Monday, with the currency pair's movement dictated by anticipation of key policy developments in Washington rather than UK-specific fundamentals.

As of 04:40 ET, the pound was down 0.10% at $1.3631, according to Investing.com data. The euro saw a similar decline, falling 0.10% to $1.1665 as currency markets adopted a cautious stance.

Dollar Dynamics Drive Markets

Analysts noted that the week's trading is being shaped by investor focus on the United States. Markets are awaiting an expected announcement from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding new sanctions on Iran, a development that could influence risk appetite.

This, along with ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, could test the market, with any significant tariff escalation seen as a negative for the dollar, according to Chris Turner, Global Head of Markets at ING. "There may still be room for further USD long-squeezing, and we remain reluctant to call the bottom in this dollar selloff just yet," Turner said in a note.

All Eyes on U.S. Data and the Fed

Investors are also looking ahead to a week of important U.S. economic signals. The upcoming events include:

  • Wednesday: The core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation reading for July.
  • Friday: A keynote speech from Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole economic symposium.

ING described the risk from Warsh's speech as "skewed hawkish," suggesting he will need to "double-down on the Fed’s inflation-fighting credentials." The investment bank expects the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) to consolidate in a 98.50-99.00 range during Monday's session.
