Background

Portugal's benchmark stock index, the PSI, ended Monday's trading session in positive territory, gaining 0.32% to close higher. The advance was primarily driven by strength in the utilities, financials, and technology sectors, according to market data.

Sector and Stock Movers

The rally was led by a handful of large-cap stocks, even as declining stocks outnumbered advancers on the Lisbon Stock Exchange by 17 to 7, with 6 ending unchanged. This suggests the session's gains were not broad-based.

Top performers on the PSI included:

  • EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR), which surged 2.13% to close at 13.42.
  • Galp Energia Nom (ELI:GALP), which added 0.97% to end the day at 20.72.
  • EDP Energias de Portugal SA (ELI:EDP), which rose 0.88% to finish at 4.69.

Broader Market Context

The positive performance in energy stocks like Galp coincided with a rise in global oil prices. Brent crude for November delivery increased by 1.42% to $97.65 a barrel, while WTI crude for October delivery gained 1.77% to $93.10 a barrel.

In currency markets, the EUR/USD pair was up marginally by 0.12% at 1.16, while the US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, fell by 0.28% to 98.87. Meanwhile, Gold Futures for December delivery saw a slight decline, trading down 0.36%.
