Pinterest Options Market Signals Further Weakness After CEO Comments Trigger 9% Sell-Off

Pinterest (NYSE: PINS) shares plunged more than 9% on Monday after comments from its chief executive highlighted ongoing struggles with international growth, prompting a surge in bearish options activity that signals investor expectations for further downside.
The stock closed the session at $18.28, a decline of 9.24%, following CEO Bill Ready’s appearance at a Goldman Sachs conference.
CEO Remarks Rattle Investors
The sell-off was catalyzed by CEO Bill Ready's remarks, where he reiterated the company's challenges in monetizing its international user base, according to a report from Investing.com. Key concerns included the impact of EU regulations on cross-border sellers from Asia and the recent departure of the company's CFO amidst a restructuring.
Ready acknowledged that there is "a lot more" work to be done to close the gap between Pinterest's user base and its revenue. While over 80% of the platform's users are outside the U.S., they currently generate only about 20% of its revenue.
Options Data Points to Continued Decline
Activity in the options market underscored the negative sentiment, with traders placing significant bets on the stock falling further. The most notable trade involved a massive increase in activity for a specific put option:
Ad- Volume: Over 30,700 total options contracts were traded during the session.
- Key Trade: 5,519 contracts were traded for the September 18 $18.50 put option, which had a previous open interest of just 21. This indicates nearly all of the volume represented fresh, bearish positions.
This large, directional bet suggests a strong conviction among some traders that Pinterest's stock will remain below $18.50 in the very near term. Further supporting this view, implied volatility and skew both rose, indicating a higher market price for downside protection (puts) relative to upside calls.
Market Weighs Turnaround Challenges
The recent drop adds to a difficult period for the stock, which is down nearly 50% over the past year, as cited by Investing.com. The combination of executive turnover, restructuring efforts, and persistent international monetization issues has created significant headwinds.
While some traders are making speculative bets on a recovery, the prevailing market sentiment remains cautious. The options flow suggests that investors are bracing for more potential pain before the company's turnaround efforts can show meaningful progress.
