Oil Prices Retreat From Six-Month Highs on Iran Diplomatic Overtures

Oil prices retreated from six-month highs on Monday as reports of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions with Iran tempered market fears of a wider conflict that could disrupt Middle Eastern crude supplies.
Benchmarks Pull Back from Rally
The decline follows a significant rally last week driven by heightened geopolitical risk. As of 02:12 ET (06:12 GMT), the key benchmarks were trading lower:
- Brent crude futures for December delivery fell 2% to $114.39 a barrel.
- U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 2.3% to $100.88 a barrel.
On Friday, Brent had settled at $116.72 a barrel, its highest closing price since April 29, after gaining about 6% during the week. WTI had settled at $103.27, posting a 2.3% weekly gain.
Diplomatic Efforts Ease Supply Fears
AdThe downward pressure on prices is primarily linked to diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing regional tensions. According to reports, Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran on Sunday in an effort coordinated with Washington to de-escalate the conflict.
Separately, Reuters reported that senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan were set to meet with Iranian counterparts in Tehran on Monday. These developments have provided some relief to markets, which had priced in a higher risk premium on fears that a broader conflict could threaten oil production and key shipping lanes.
Geopolitical Risks Remain
Despite the session's losses, the potential for supply disruptions continues to underpin the market. Attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement on Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure have continued, with the group claiming responsibility for strikes on an airport and oil facilities over the weekend.
Adding to supply-side concerns, Libya’s National Oil Corporation reported last week that a pipeline valve closure has reduced production from its Hamada and Tahara oilfields. The security situation around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic chokepoint for oil tankers, has also reportedly deteriorated, keeping investors on alert for further developments.
