Nvidia's Vera Rubin Platform Shows 10x Power Efficiency Gain Over Blackwell, Enters Production

Summary
Nvidia announced its next-generation Vera Rubin AI platform is entering production, with partner CoreWeave reporting benchmark results showing a 10x improvement in throughput per megawatt over the current Blackwell architecture.
Nvidia's next-generation AI platform, Vera Rubin, is entering production with early benchmarks indicating a tenfold increase in power efficiency over its Blackwell predecessor. The announcement, which includes deployments by major cloud providers and AI firms, helped lift the company's shares 2% on Tuesday amid a broader rebound in semiconductor stocks.
Landmark Efficiency Gains
According to benchmark results reported by cloud provider CoreWeave, the Vera Rubin NVL72 system delivers 10 times more throughput per megawatt than the Grace Blackwell NVL72 when running the DeepSeek-R1 model. This significant leap in performance-per-watt is a critical metric for data center operators, as it directly impacts operational costs and computational density.
The Vera Rubin platform is designed as an integrated rack-scale system, combining seven chips and five trays. Nvidia highlighted a design that uses a 45-degree Celsius liquid cooling inlet, enabling chiller-free operation and reducing compute tray assembly time to just one minute.
Broad Industry Adoption
Nvidia stated the platform is being rolled out with more than 300 global partners across 350 factory sites in 30 countries. Major technology companies are among the first to deploy the new hardware.
Ad- Microsoft and Mistral announced a multibillion-dollar partnership to expand AI infrastructure in Europe using Vera Rubin GPUs.
- Google Cloud has launched its A5X instance, a bare-metal system built on the Vera Rubin NVL72 configuration.
- CoreWeave and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure were also named as key partners deploying the new system.
Under the Hood: New CPU and Networking
The platform's new Vera CPU, which features a custom Olympus core, also shows significant performance improvements. Citing benchmark results from DeepInfra, Nvidia said the CPU can support up to 1.6 times more concurrent AI agents and delivers up to 2.2 times faster orchestration compared to alternative CPUs.
The system is further enhanced by sixth-generation NVLink scale-up technology and Spectrum-X Ethernet, featuring 102.4T Spectrum-6 switch systems. Infrastructure builders including CoreWeave, Microsoft, SpaceXAI, and Tesla are reportedly deploying the new switches.
