Nucor Stock Slides After Q3 Earnings Guidance Misses Analyst Forecasts

Shares of Nucor Corporation (NUE) declined in after-hours trading after the steel manufacturer issued third-quarter earnings guidance that fell short of Wall Street forecasts, signaling pressure from the absence of prior one-time gains.
Guidance Misses Expectations
The Charlotte-based company announced it projects net earnings for the quarter ending October 3, 2026, to be in the range of $5.55 to $5.65 per diluted share. This forecast is notably below the consensus analyst estimate of $5.99 per share, according to a report from Investing.com.
Following the release, Nucor stock fell 3.8% in after-hours trading. While the projected earnings represent a substantial increase from the $2.63 per share earned in the third quarter of 2025, the miss against current expectations weighed on investor sentiment.
One-Time Items Impact Outlook
Nucor's guidance is impacted by the non-recurrence of two significant items that boosted its second-quarter 2026 results. The company noted that these benefits are not expected to repeat in the third quarter.
These one-time items include:
Ad- A $61 million non-cash benefit related to the increased valuation of its investment in fusion energy company Helion.
- Approximately $130 million in refunds from prior-period raw material procurement, which had lowered its cost of goods sold.
The company also anticipates weaker performance in its raw materials segment due to lower pricing and shipment volumes, which is expected to partially offset gains in its steel mills and steel products divisions.
Market and Sector Context
The disappointing guidance comes amid a largely neutral market backdrop and highlights investor concerns about margin sustainability within the cyclical steel industry. The announcement from Nucor, a bellwether for the sector, may increase scrutiny on peers like Steel Dynamics and Cleveland-Cliffs.
This development follows reports that Berkshire Hathaway significantly reduced its stake in Nucor during the second quarter of 2026, signaling a potential shift in sentiment from a key institutional investor.
