Novartis Shares Fall After Key Cardiovascular Drug Fails Phase III Trial
Text size
Background

Novartis AG (NOVN) shares fell sharply on Tuesday after the Swiss pharmaceutical giant announced its high-profile cardiovascular drug, pelacarsen, failed to meet its primary objective in a pivotal Phase III clinical trial. The selloff weighed heavily on the broader Swiss market, making the drugmaker the primary drag on the main index.

Trial Fails to Meet Primary Endpoint

According to a company disclosure, the Phase III Lp(a)HORIZON study for pelacarsen did not achieve its primary endpoint of reducing major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) — including heart attacks, strokes, and death — compared to a placebo. The therapy was developed in partnership with Ionis Pharmaceuticals.

While the drug successfully lowered blood concentrations of lipoprotein(a), a key biomarker associated with heart disease, Novartis confirmed this biological effect did not translate into a statistically significant clinical benefit for patients. This outcome undermines the core investment thesis for the asset as a potential blockbuster treatment.

Market Reaction

In response to the news, Novartis stock dropped 3.5% in Swiss trading to CHF 125.02. The official announcement confirmed negative signals that had emerged on September 4, when the company's U.S.-listed depositary shares fell in after-hours trading as early results circulated.

As one of the largest components of the Swiss Market Index (SMI), Novartis's decline was the main driver behind the index's 1.2% drop. The negative sentiment was compounded by a cautious macroeconomic environment, including rising oil prices and anticipation of an interest rate hike from the European Central Bank.
