Northrop Grumman Opens Maryland Facility to Scale Up Rocket Motor Production

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has opened its new Propulsion Innovation Center in Elkton, Maryland, a key development in the company's effort to expand its manufacturing capacity for advanced defense technologies. The 57,000-square-foot facility is designed to accelerate the development of solid rocket motors and other propulsion systems for U.S. and allied military programs.
Strategic Investment in Maryland
The new center, which will house 250 engineers, is the centerpiece of a $100 million investment by Northrop Grumman at its Elkton site. The company stated this investment will increase the site's solid rocket motor design and manufacturing capacity by 25% and support a staffing increase of more than 30%.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighted the state's role in the defense sector. "Maryland is the best place to build and hire," Moore said. "That’s why we’re proud to have important partners, like Northrop Grumman, who are choosing Maryland."
Boosting National Munitions Output
This facility opening is part of a much broader strategic push by the defense firm to meet rising demand for munitions. Northrop Grumman noted it has invested over $2 billion in munitions-related technology and facilities in the last seven years.
AdThe company is scaling up production across its network with specific targets, including:
- Increasing annual solid rocket propellant capacity from approximately 30 million pounds today to nearly 50 million pounds by 2028.
- Raising annual rocket motor production from about 13,000 units in 2024 to more than 25,000 by 2029.
Context for Investors
The expansion reflects sustained demand from the U.S. Department of Defense and international partners for advanced weapons, particularly in the areas of hypersonic and long-range tactical missiles. By increasing its production capacity, Northrop Grumman is positioning itself to secure larger and more numerous contracts as governments work to replenish stockpiles and modernize their arsenals in response to the current geopolitical landscape.
