Navan Shares Tumble as Rising Costs and Tepid Guidance Overshadow Earnings Beat

Shares of Navan plunged 13.9% in pre-market trading Thursday to $22.30 after the corporate travel and expense software firm's latest financial results disappointed investors. The selloff occurred despite Navan beating analyst expectations on both revenue and profit for its fiscal second quarter of 2027.
Costs and Guidance Disappoint
Navan reported quarterly results after Wednesday's market close that, on the surface, appeared strong. Revenue grew 35% year-over-year to $232.8 million, surpassing the consensus estimate of $220.5 million. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.05, also ahead of the $0.04 forecast.
However, investors looked past the headline figures to focus on deteriorating profitability metrics. The company's operating expenses surged 46% to $200.2 million, growing significantly faster than its revenue. This cost pressure caused the GAAP operating loss to more than double, widening to $25.6 million from $12.3 million in the same period a year earlier.
Furthermore, Navan's updated full-year forecast failed to provide a positive catalyst. While the company raised its revenue guidance to a midpoint of approximately $930 million, this figure was largely in line with what Wall Street analysts were already expecting, offering little incremental upside to justify a higher valuation.
AdInvestor Reaction and Context
The market's negative reaction highlights a classic case of high expectations not being met. Investors sold off the stock due to a combination of factors that overshadowed the quarterly beat:
- Surging operating costs that outpaced strong revenue growth.
- A widening operating loss, signaling pressure on the bottom line.
- Underwhelming full-year guidance that failed to clear a high bar set by analysts.
- A near-term drag on profitability from the recent BoomPop acquisition, with accretion not expected until fiscal 2028.
Analysts at Citizens maintained their Market Outperform rating and a $38 price target on the stock, acknowledging the strong operational performance but recognizing the market's disappointment with the modest beat and guidance. The broader market offered little support, with the Nasdaq Composite trading lower in the morning session, adding to the selling pressure on the stock.
