Micro1 Challenges Google with $12.5 Million Bid for Spirit Aviation's AI Training Data

AI startup micro1 Inc. has submitted a $12.5 million competing bid for the business records of the defunct Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc., challenging a previously approved $10 million offer from Google LLC. The move escalates the competition for large-scale, real-world data sets crucial for training artificial intelligence models.
The Competing Offer
According to a Thursday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, micro1's offer represents a 25% premium over Google's bid, which was selected as the winner at an August 14, 2026, auction. The filing states the new offer has no financing conditions or board consent requirements, potentially streamlining the acquisition process.
A court hearing to consider the sale is scheduled for September 9, 2026. At the prior auction, Mercor.io Corporation was named the alternate bidder with a $7.5 million offer. The bidding is part of Spirit Aviation's Chapter 11 liquidation after the Florida-based carrier shut down in May.
Data Assets and Union Concerns
The data package at the center of the bidding war is extensive and valuable for AI training purposes. Key assets include:
Ad- 500 million Microsoft Teams items
- 100 million emails
- Approximately 16 million customer chat sessions
- Other operational and internal information
A significant aspect of micro1's bid is its effort to resolve objections from labor unions, including the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. The company committed to exclude sensitive employment content, prohibit the re-association of employee data for profiling, and bear all de-identification costs without reducing the purchase price.
Market Context
The aggressive bidding for Spirit's records underscores the high value the technology industry places on proprietary data for developing next-generation AI. micro1, which operates a platform for AI training data, stated it has closed more than 50 data transactions in the last 45 days, indicating a rapidly growing market.
As part of its proposal, micro1 also pledged to provide former Spirit employees with free access to its AI training curriculum. This move, along with the data privacy commitments, appears designed to make its offer more appealing to the court and other stakeholders compared to the bid from the established tech giant.
