Meta Shares Fall 4% as OpenAI Prepares to Unveil Competing AI Assistant

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) shares fell 4.2% to $720.36 in Monday trading, pulling back from a recent surge as investors reacted to news of a potential new competitor in the artificial intelligence agent space from OpenAI.

The stock's decline follows a roughly 30% rally in September, which was largely fueled by the successful launch of Meta's own personal AI assistant, Muse.

OpenAI's New Agent Poses Direct Challenge

The immediate catalyst for the sell-off is the anticipated unveiling of a new AI product from OpenAI at its DevDay keynote on Tuesday, September 29. According to a September 27 report from BleepingComputer, the rumored "o" assistant is a cloud-based agent capable of performing complex, long-term tasks, such as managing email, even after a user closes the application.

This poses a direct competitive threat to Meta's Muse, which had gained significant market traction since its September 8 launch. Muse has accumulated over 3.4 million downloads and reached the top spot in the U.S. App Store, outperforming ChatGPT. The agent's success prompted analysts to raise their outlooks, with Wells Fargo recently increasing its price target on Meta to $796 from $640. Citi analyst Ronald Josey described Muse as "emerging as the centerpiece of Meta’s AI product strategy."

Enterprise Expansion and Executive Move

Separately, Meta announced on Monday the launch of its Meta Enterprise Platform, a new division aimed at bringing its AI models, including Muse, to business customers. To lead the effort, Meta hired Chirantan "CJ" Desai as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer.

Desai's move from his previous role as CEO of MongoDB (NASDAQ:MDB) had a significant market impact, causing MongoDB's shares to plummet 18% to $336.79 intraday. MongoDB has appointed founder Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO.

Scrutiny Over AI Investment Costs

The competitive pressure comes as Meta faces broader questions about its significant financial commitment to AI. Goldman Sachs last week raised concerns about the return on the company's massive AI investments, with capital expenditures for the full year projected to be between $130 billion and $145 billion.

Despite the high costs and new competition, CEO Mark Zuckerberg reaffirmed the company's strategy at the Meta Connect conference on September 24. "It is actually quite clear personal superintelligence will not only come first; it will be much bigger and more important," he said. "So we have shifted our focus to building the best devices for personal superintelligence."
