Background

Meta Platforms (META) has discontinued a new artificial intelligence feature just days after its launch, following significant backlash over privacy concerns from users and prominent industry groups.

The feature, called Muse Image, was introduced on Tuesday as part of Meta's AI chatbot and was designed to generate images using public photos from Instagram accounts as input.

Feature Scrapped After Criticism

In a statement on Friday, Meta acknowledged that the tool had drawn widespread criticism. The company stated its intent was to offer a creative tool while giving users control over their content, but conceded the feature failed to meet expectations.

"We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available," Meta said, as reported by Reuters. The rapid reversal highlights the growing sensitivity surrounding the use of public data for training and operating generative AI models.

Union and Users Voice Concerns

The primary objection centered on the feature's automatic opt-in nature, which meant users' public content could be used by default. Emmy-winning actor Hannah Einbinder criticized the feature on Instagram, alerting users that it had been enabled automatically and providing instructions on how to disable it.

The screen actors' union, SAG-AFTRA, also took a strong stance, urging its members and the public on Thursday to opt out. The union called anything other than a "clear and conspicuous opt-in" for this type of image use "unacceptable" and an "utter miscalculation of public sentiment."

Following Meta's decision, a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson welcomed the move, stating, "With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance. It is the responsible thing to do."

Implications for AI Development

This incident underscores the increasing pressure on technology companies to prioritize user consent and transparency as they integrate advanced AI capabilities. For investors, it serves as a reminder of the potential reputational and operational risks associated with AI product rollouts that fail to adequately address public privacy concerns. The swift withdrawal of Muse Image demonstrates the power of public and industry-led pressure in shaping corporate policy on AI ethics.
