Meta Platforms has discontinued a new artificial intelligence feature that generated images using public Instagram photos, pulling the tool just days after its launch following a significant backlash over user privacy concerns.

The company confirmed on Friday that the feature, called Muse Image, is no longer available. In a statement, Meta said, "We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark," and acknowledged that its intent was to provide a creative tool while giving users control over their content.

Rapid Reversal After Backlash

Launched on Tuesday, Muse Image was the first image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. The tool was integrated into the Meta AI chatbot and allowed users to create or edit images using publicly available photos from Instagram accounts as input.

Criticism mounted quickly, focusing on the feature being an automatic opt-in for all users with public accounts. This meant their photos could be used by the AI model without their explicit, prior consent, raising alarm among users and advocacy groups.

The move drew sharp criticism from prominent figures and organizations. Emmy-winning actor Hannah Einbinder publicly criticized the feature on Instagram, noting it was enabled by default and urged her followers to disable it.

SAG-AFTRA, the influential union representing actors and media professionals, also issued a statement on Thursday urging its members and the public to opt out. The union called anything other than a "clear and conspicuous opt-in" for this type of image use "unacceptable" and an "utter miscalculation of public sentiment." Following Meta's reversal, a union spokesperson welcomed the decision, stating, "We appreciate its discontinuance. It is the responsible thing to do."

Context for Investors

This rapid withdrawal highlights the increasing scrutiny and reputational risk tech companies face as they roll out new generative AI products. The incident underscores the tension between AI model development, which often relies on vast datasets of public content, and growing user demands for data privacy and explicit consent.

For investors, this event serves as a reminder of the regulatory and public relations challenges inherent in the AI sector. The market's reaction to how companies handle data ethics and user privacy is becoming a critical factor in evaluating their long-term strategy and potential liabilities.
