Meta Pulls New AI Image Generator After Privacy Backlash From Users, Actors' Union

Meta Platforms (META) has discontinued a new artificial intelligence feature that generated images from public Instagram accounts, pulling the tool just days after its launch following a significant backlash over user privacy.
The company announced on Friday that it was shutting down the feature, known as Muse Image, which had been introduced on Tuesday as part of its Meta AI chatbot. In a statement, Meta acknowledged the negative feedback, saying, "We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available."
Widespread Criticism Over Data Use
The controversy centered on the feature's use of public Instagram photos as input and its status as an automatic opt-in for users, meaning their content could be used by default without explicit consent. The move drew immediate and sharp criticism from privacy advocates and creative professionals.
The actors' union SAG-AFTRA was a prominent critic, urging its members and the public on Thursday to opt out of the feature. The union called the policy "unacceptable, and an utter miscalculation of public sentiment regarding the obvious dangers and harms inherent in such use." Following Meta's reversal, a union spokesperson welcomed the decision, calling it "the responsible thing to do."
AdImplications for AI Development
Meta's rapid reversal highlights the increasing pressure on technology companies to provide users with transparent control over how their publicly shared data is utilized for AI training and generation. The incident underscores the reputational and operational risks companies face when deploying new AI technologies without fully addressing public privacy concerns.
For investors, this event serves as a reminder of the regulatory and public sentiment hurdles in the AI sector. While new features aim to drive engagement, missteps on privacy can lead to swift reversals and damage user trust, impacting the long-term adoption of a company's AI ecosystem.
