Meta Launches Dedicated 'Seller' App for Facebook Marketplace in the US

Meta (NASDAQ: META) has launched a new standalone mobile application named Seller, designed to provide a more robust set of tools for users who sell goods on Facebook Marketplace. The app is now available on the App Store for users aged 18 and older in the United States, signaling a strategic move to better support the platform's large base of individual and small-business merchants.
New Tools for Sellers
The Seller app integrates with existing Facebook Marketplace accounts, migrating current listings, messages, and sales history. Its primary function is to centralize and streamline the selling process through a dedicated interface. According to the company's announcement, key features include:
- AI-Powered Listings: The app uses Meta AI to assist sellers by automatically generating titles, descriptions, and price suggestions from user-uploaded photos.
- Unified Inbox: Buyer conversations are organized by item, allowing for more efficient communication management.
- Performance Analytics: A dashboard provides sellers with data on key metrics such as listing views, clicks, and completed sales.
- Inventory Management: The app includes tools for managing multiple items, including support for bulk listing creation.
Strategic Context
AdThe launch formalizes the selling experience on a platform that has grown significantly since its origins in Facebook Groups a decade ago. Facebook Marketplace now hosts 430 million item listings each month globally, making it a major player in peer-to-peer and local e-commerce.
By offering a dedicated app with more sophisticated tools, Meta appears to be aiming to professionalize the platform. This could help it better compete with established online marketplaces like eBay and Etsy by retaining and attracting more active sellers, which could in turn enhance the buying experience and deepen user engagement within Meta's ecosystem.
Availability and Future Plans
The initial rollout of the Seller app is limited to iOS users in the U.S. Facebook stated that an Android version is currently in testing and that it plans to release a web version for desktop users. The company also noted that it will update the app based on early user feedback.
