Major Currency Pairs Face Billions in Option Expiries This Wednesday

Foreign exchange markets are closely watching a series of large option expiries scheduled for Wednesday, with contracts worth billions of dollars set to mature across major currency pairs. These events can influence trading activity, potentially creating price magnets around key strike levels as the expiry time approaches.
Key Expiries in Focus
Data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) reveals significant notional values concentrated at several strike prices for Wednesday's session:
- EUR/USD: The most notable expiries include €1.88 billion at the 1.1400 strike, €1.33 billion at 1.1500, and €960 million at 1.1750.
- USD/JPY: Key levels include $1.12 billion at 164.50, $1.05 billion at 160.00, and $949.6 million at 163.50.
- GBP/USD: A single large expiry is noted at the 1.3350 strike, worth £1.37 billion.
- USD/CAD: Expiries are spread across strikes at 1.4250 ($731.4 million), 1.4100 ($594.3 million), and 1.3000 ($560 million).
Other pairs with scheduled expiries on Wednesday include AUD/USD, USD/BRL, and USD/CNY, among others, according to the DTCC data.
Potential Market Impact
AdLarge option expiries can exert a gravitational pull on the spot price of a currency pair, a phenomenon known as "pinning." Traders with exposure to these options may hedge their positions by buying or selling the underlying currency, which can dampen volatility and keep the price close to the strike level leading up to the expiry.
Once the options expire, this pinning effect disappears, which can sometimes lead to a release of pent-up volatility. The actual impact on the market depends on how close the spot price is to these large strike prices as the expiry deadline nears.
Looking Ahead to Later in the Week
Traders should also be aware of additional significant expiries scheduled for later in the week. On Friday, July 10, the EUR/USD pair has strikes at 1.1300 (€1.63 billion) and 1.1405 (€1.24 billion).
Furthermore, a particularly large USD/JPY option expiry is set for Monday, July 13, with $3.42 billion in notional value at the 160.50 strike price. These future expiries will likely become a focus for the market as the dates approach.
