Major Currency Pairs Brace for Billions in Wednesday Option Expiries

Background

Foreign exchange markets are monitoring a series of large option contracts scheduled to expire on Wednesday, a development that could influence price action in several major currency pairs. According to data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), these expiries represent billions of dollars in notional value concentrated at specific price levels.

Key Expiries by Pair

The most significant concentrations are seen in the EUR/USD and USD/JPY pairs. Traders will be closely watching the following key strike prices:

  • EUR/USD: The euro has substantial expiries, including €1.88 billion at the 1.1400 strike, €1.33 billion at 1.1500, and €960 million at 1.1750.
  • USD/JPY: For the dollar-yen, notable contracts include $1.12 billion at 164.50, $1.05 billion at 160.00, and $949.6 million at 163.50.
  • GBP/USD: A single large expiry of £1.37 billion is positioned at the 1.3350 strike price.
  • USD/CAD: The Canadian dollar pair has expiries including $731.4 million at 1.4250 and $594.3 million at 1.4100.

Other pairs with scheduled Wednesday expiries include AUD/USD, USD/CNY, and NZD/USD, among others, according to the DTCC data.

Potential Market Impact

Large option expiries often act as a 'magnet' for the spot price of a currency pair, a phenomenon known as pin risk. As the typical 10 a.m. ET New York cut-off time approaches, spot prices may gravitate toward strike prices that have a high concentration of open interest.

This effect can occur as large market participants hedge their positions to minimize potential losses, which can temporarily suppress volatility and 'pin' the price near the strike level. These levels may therefore act as temporary points of support or resistance throughout the trading session.

Looking Ahead to Further Expiries

Beyond Wednesday, additional significant option expiries are scheduled for later in the week and into the next. On Friday, July 10, a €1.63 billion contract for EUR/USD is set at the 1.1300 strike.

A particularly large expiry for USD/JPY is on the calendar for Monday, July 13, with $3.42 billion in notional value at the 160.50 strike price, which could set the tone for that pair early next week.
