Lockheed Martin Unveils AIM-260 Missile, Secures Deal to Accelerate Production

Summary
The defense contractor officially revealed details of its previously classified AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM), a long-range weapon designed to counter advanced threats, and announced an agreement with the Pentagon to boost output.
Lockheed Martin on Thursday officially disclosed details of its long-secret AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) and announced a new agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate its production. The move comes as the Pentagon seeks to replenish munitions stockpiles and counter advanced aerial threats from nations like China.
New Missile to Counter Advanced Threats
The AIM-260 has been developed for years under a classified program to address increasingly capable long-range air threats. According to a statement from Lockheed, the weapon provides greater range and effectiveness than the U.S. military's current air-to-air missiles, offering a key advantage against advanced aircraft like the Chinese J-20 fighter jet.
The missile is designed for integration with stealth fighters, including the F-22 Raptor and F-35. "JATM is one of our nation’s most important air dominance capabilities, but because of the classified nature of the program, it’s also a story we haven’t been able to tell," said Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, in the statement.
Production and Procurement
The defense contractor also revealed a new framework agreement with the Pentagon aimed at significantly boosting JATM production. This initiative is part of a broader push to rebuild U.S. and allied munitions inventories, which a Reuters report noted were depleted following the "war on Iran."
AdThis agreement paves the way for a potential multiyear procurement contract, signaling stable, long-term demand from the U.S. government. Under the deal, Lockheed Martin will fund the necessary investments to expand its manufacturing capacity for the program, according to the company.
Early Demand and Market Implications
The JATM is already attracting international interest. Australia has announced its intention to purchase the missiles in a deal valued at approximately $521 million, although the specific quantity and per-unit cost were not disclosed.
For investors, the official unveiling and production ramp-up of the AIM-260 represents a potentially significant new revenue stream for Lockheed's Missiles and Fire Control business segment. The combination of domestic multiyear procurement and strong allied demand could provide a stable, long-term growth driver for the defense giant.
