Background

KONE (KNEBV) shares fell 3.9% on Wednesday after the Finnish elevator and escalator company reported third-quarter results that missed profitability expectations and lowered its full-year guidance, overshadowing a strong order intake.

Profitability Misses Estimates

According to its January–September 2026 Interim Report, KONE's operating profit for the third quarter was €319.4 million, falling short of the analyst consensus of approximately €338–€340 million. Earnings per share (EPS) of €0.48 also missed the consensus estimate of €0.50.

The market reaction was primarily driven by the company's decision to adjust its full-year guidance downwards. Such revisions often trigger a more significant investor response than a standalone quarterly earnings miss, as they signal a change in the company's expectations for its future performance.

China Headwinds and Guidance Cut

CEO Philippe Delorme attributed the weaker-than-expected quarter to several factors, including a decline in profitability within China, higher provisions for bad debts, and persistent cost pressures from inflation. Delorme noted that while profit margins improved in regions outside of China, the challenges in the Chinese market weighed on the overall results.

The combination of these pressures led management to narrow and lower its financial outlook for the full year, creating a confluence of selling pressure on the stock. The negative sentiment was compounded by two analyst downgrades from OP Corporate Bank and AlphaValue/Baader Europe in the weeks leading up to the report.

Strong Orders Fail to Reassure Investors

Despite the profitability concerns, KONE reported some positive developments. Order intake for the quarter reached €2,076.6 million, exceeding analyst consensus by more than 4%. The company also highlighted strong growth across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa and noted progress on regulatory approvals for its planned combination with TKE.

However, these bright spots were insufficient to offset investor concerns surrounding the guidance cut and ongoing margin challenges. The news also came as industry peer Otis Worldwide reported its own quarterly earnings, placing the elevator sector in the market spotlight.
