Kalshi Implements Deposit Limits, Trading Alerts for Young Users

Prediction market platform Kalshi announced on Tuesday it is strengthening safeguards for young-adult traders in an effort to curb addiction and promote responsible trading. The new measures, which apply to users aged 18 to 20, come as the sector faces criticism over risks resembling gambling.
New Trading Guardrails
Kalshi is implementing several specific restrictions and alerts aimed at mitigating potential losses for its youngest demographic of traders. The company stated these new users require more education and safeguards.
Key measures include:
- A $2,500 monthly deposit limit for all traders between the ages of 18 and 20 to prevent significant financial losses.
- An alert system for new traders with balances over $1,000 who allocate more than 25% of their funds to a single trade, encouraging diversification.
Industry Context and Scrutiny
AdThe move comes as prediction markets, which allow users to wager on the outcomes of events ranging from elections to military operations, have grown in popularity. This growth has also attracted scrutiny from critics who argue the platforms carry addiction risks similar to gambling.
"Like the stock exchange, Kalshi is available only to traders 18 and older," said Luana Lopes Lara, Kalshi's chief operating officer and co-founder. She added that the company believes "new traders need more education and safeguards."
Educational Initiatives
In addition to the new trading limits, Kalshi announced partnerships with youth and parent safety organizations Parent ProTech and ConnectSafely. The company will work with these groups to publish guides for parents to better understand prediction markets.
