France Undecided on UAE's Role in Dassault Rafale Jet Upgrade, Minister Says

France has not yet determined the extent of the United Arab Emirates' participation in developing an upgraded version of the Dassault Rafale fighter jet, French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin said on Tuesday. The statement comes as the two nations have resumed discussions on a joint enhancement program for the multirole combat aircraft after earlier talks stalled.
Details of Partnership Remain Vague
Speaking at a parliamentary committee hearing, Vautrin addressed the renewed plans for collaboration but offered few specifics. When questioned by a Senator about potential transfers of sensitive technologies to the UAE, the minister declined to comment directly.
Vautrin stated only that any contracts would specify industrial aspects that are "absolutely critical." The lack of clarity suggests that key terms of the potential partnership, including technology sharing and industrial work-share, are still under negotiation.
Implications for Defense Industry
AdThe outcome of these discussions is significant for the Rafale's manufacturer, Dassault Aviation (Euronext: AM). A substantial partnership with the UAE could provide a crucial injection of funding for the next-generation fighter program and solidify a key export relationship.
Investors and defense industry analysts are closely monitoring the talks, as a successful joint development program could enhance the Rafale's competitive position in the global market and have a material impact on Dassault's future order book.
Shift in French Defense Strategy
During the hearing, Vautrin also commented on France's wider defense procurement strategy. She noted that the financial impact of shifting from the abandoned pan-European Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program to a national project would be "almost neutral." This indicates that France is re-calibrating its defense development plans following the collapse of the multinational initiative.
