J.P. Morgan Prefers European Financial Platforms, Downgrades UK Firms on Economic Concerns

Summary
J.P. Morgan has resumed coverage on European financial platforms, issuing 'Overweight' ratings for Italian and Nordic firms while downgrading UK players like St. James's Place due to a challenging economic outlook.
J.P. Morgan has resumed coverage of European investment platforms and exchanges with a selective approach, favoring continental firms while citing a challenging economic backdrop as a significant drag on their UK counterparts. The bank's updated ratings highlight a clear divergence in growth prospects across the region.
Continental Platforms Favored
In a note to clients, J.P. Morgan expressed a positive outlook on several European financial services companies, initiating Italian savings platforms FinecoBank and Banca Mediolanum with "Overweight" ratings. The bank cited strong industry growth, limited competition, and a favorable regulatory environment as key drivers for the Italian firms.
Both stocks were also placed on a "Positive Catalyst Watch" ahead of their third-quarter results, with the bank anticipating upward revisions to consensus estimates for net interest income. In the Nordics, online broker Nordnet was upgraded to "Overweight" from "Neutral," supported by strong customer acquisition and multiple potential growth catalysts.
UK Firms Face Headwinds
The bank was notably more cautious on UK-based platforms due to macroeconomic pressures. Wealth manager St. James’s Place was downgraded to "Neutral" from "Overweight," with analysts warning that higher interest rates and potential tax increases could weigh on investment flows.
AdJ.P. Morgan placed the firm on a "Negative Catalyst Watch," forecasting its third-quarter net flows to be approximately 20% below consensus. Similarly, platform operator Aberdeen Group was also downgraded to "Neutral," with the bank attributing the move to the challenging UK backdrop constraining near-term growth. Quilter was an exception, maintaining its "Overweight" rating.
Exchanges See Selective Upgrades
Among market infrastructure providers, London Stock Exchange Group and Deutsche Boerse were both reinstated with "Overweight" ratings. J.P. Morgan noted LSEG's strong operational performance and structural growth drivers, while highlighting Deutsche Boerse's earnings growth and diversification.
Broker-dealer TP ICAP also received an "Overweight" rating, with the bank expecting its growth to accelerate. In contrast, Euronext was resumed at "Neutral," as analysts believe much of its growth potential is already reflected in its valuation. All price targets issued in the report are for December 2027.
