Background

Johnson Controls International (JCI) shares surged 3.8% in pre-open trading after the company announced fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and a full-year outlook that exceeded analyst expectations. The strong performance was underpinned by a rapidly growing order backlog and sustained demand for its building automation and technology solutions.

Earnings Beat and Record Backlog

For the fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, Johnson Controls reported an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.66, a 32% increase year-over-year and ahead of the consensus estimate of $1.58. Net sales climbed 10% to $7.11 billion. The company cited sustained demand for data centers as a key driver for its performance.

Operational momentum was evident in the company's order book. Key figures from the report include:

  • Q4 organic orders jumped 44% year-over-year.
  • The total backlog reached a record $23.0 billion, up 43% organically.
  • Adjusted EBIT margin expanded by 3 percentage points to 18.3%.

"We finished fiscal 2026 with significant momentum, delivering more than 8% organic revenue growth, double-digit adjusted EPS growth and strong free cash flow conversion," said CEO Joakim Weidemanis in a statement.

Adding to investor confidence, Johnson Controls issued an optimistic forecast for fiscal 2027 that came in above consensus expectations. The company projects full-year organic sales growth of 11% to 12%, with an even stronger start expected in the first quarter at 12% to 14%.

For the full fiscal year 2027, the company anticipates adjusted EPS in the range of $6.15 to $6.30. It also guided for an adjusted free cash flow conversion rate of approximately 95%, signaling continued operational efficiency.

Portfolio Streamlining and Market Reaction

In a separate announcement, Johnson Controls revealed it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its global intrusion products business to Truelink Capital. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, and represents a move to streamline its portfolio.

The stock's significant pre-market rally far outpaced the broader market, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite showing only modest gains. The positive move was supported by a constructive analyst consensus heading into the report, with both BofA and Morgan Stanley having recently raised their price targets on the stock.
