JD Sports CFO Backs Nike Turnaround, Cites Product Strength

Summary
The finance chief of major retailer JD Sports has endorsed Nike's turnaround efforts, stating that a recovery is 'only a matter of time' despite a significant drop in the sportswear giant's share price this year.
The chief financial officer of JD Sports, a key retail partner for Nike, has voiced strong confidence in the U.S. sportswear giant's recovery strategy, calling a turnaround "only a matter of time." The endorsement provides a crucial vote of confidence for Nike as it navigates a challenging market and investor skepticism.
A Key Partner's Perspective
Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday after JD Sports published its first-half results, CFO Dominic Platt stated that Nike is "doing absolutely the right things" to revive its business. He emphasized the brand's enduring popularity, noting that despite recent market commentary, Nike remains the "most popular brand out there."
Platt dismissed any frustration with the pace of Nike's progress, telling Reuters, "This is a big business and big businesses don’t turn round in six months." JD Sports is one of Nike's largest global customers, giving its perspective significant weight within the industry.
Market Context and Turnaround Efforts
The comments come as Nike's stock has faced significant pressure, with its shares falling 43% year-to-date amid investor impatience. Under CEO Elliott Hill, who is nearly two years into his role, Nike has been executing a strategic reset.
AdThis strategy includes:
- Refocusing on core sports categories such as running and soccer.
- Rebuilding and strengthening its wholesale relationships with retailers like JD Sports.
- Driving innovation with the introduction of new products.
Early Signs of Success
According to Platt, early results of the strategy are already visible at the consumer level. He highlighted that Nike's performance running shoe lines are performing well.
"What we do see is their performance ranges are coming through well - brands like Vomero, Pegasus are resonating well with customers," Platt said, pointing to tangible evidence that the product-led portion of the turnaround is gaining traction.
