Indian Equities Close Lower as Tech and Energy Stocks Weigh on Indices

Indian benchmark equity indices finished lower at the close of Wednesday's trading session, as significant losses in the technology and energy sectors offset gains elsewhere in the market. The downturn was led by steep falls in major constituents like Infosys and Reliance Industries.
Market Close in Detail
At the close of trading, the Nifty 50 index declined by 0.22%, while the broader BSE Sensex 30 registered a loss of 0.48%. According to exchange data, the session's weakness was concentrated in the Oil & Gas, Technology, and IT sectors.
Despite the negative performance of the main indices, overall market breadth was slightly positive. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 1,397 stocks advanced compared to 1,266 that declined, with 44 ending unchanged.
Sector and Stock Movers
The decline was heavily influenced by some of the market's largest companies. The worst-performing stocks on the Nifty 50 included:
Ad- Infosys Ltd (NSE:INFY), which fell 4.03%.
- Reliance Industries Ltd (NSE:RELI), which declined 3.00% and hit a 52-week low during the session.
- Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (NSE:ONGC), which was down 2.39%.
Bucking the trend, several stocks posted strong gains. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (NSE:APLH) was the top performer on the Nifty 50, surging 4.58%. Engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Ltd (NSE:LART) also performed well, adding 3.95%.
Broader Market Context
In a sign that may suggest easing investor anxiety about near-term price swings, the India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, fell 1.01% to 16.24.
In currency markets, the Indian rupee weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/INR pair rising 0.21% to 95.31. Meanwhile, in commodities, crude oil prices advanced, with the Brent oil contract for January delivery rising 1.43% to trade at $110.97 a barrel.
