Indian Equities Close Lower as HDFC Bank, Infosys Drag Benchmarks Down

Indian stock market benchmarks finished lower on Tuesday, snapping a winning streak as declines in major technology and financial companies weighed on investor sentiment. At the close of trading, the Nifty 50 index was down 0.19%, while the BSE Sensex 30 lost 0.31%.
Sectoral Pressures Drive Decline
The day's losses were primarily driven by weakness in the Information Technology, Healthcare, and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors, according to market data. Several blue-chip stocks acted as the main drag on the headline indices.
Key laggards on the Nifty 50 included:
- HDFC Bank Ltd (NSE:HDBK): fell 2.08%
- Infosys Ltd (NSE:INFY): declined 1.52%
- State Bank Of India (NSE:SBI): was down 1.45%
Pockets of Strength Emerge
AdDespite the negative close for the main indices, some financial services firms posted strong gains. Shriram Finance Ltd. was the top performer on the Nifty 50, rising 2.77%. IndusInd Bank Ltd. also had a standout session, adding 2.53% to reach a new 52-week high. Bajaj Finserv Ltd rounded out the top gainers, climbing 2.11%.
Market Internals Show Mixed Picture
While the benchmark indices fell, the broader market showed more resilience. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones by a margin of 1,354 to 1,184. This suggests that the selling pressure was concentrated in large-cap names rather than being a market-wide phenomenon.
In a sign that investor anxiety may be limited, the India VIX, a key measure of expected market volatility, fell by 3.41% to 12.54. A decline in the so-called "fear gauge" during a market downturn can indicate that traders do not anticipate significant further price swings in the near term.
