ICBC Leads Payouts as Chinese Banks Announce Over CNY 266 Billion in Interim Dividends

Twenty publicly traded banks in China have announced plans to distribute over CNY 266.11 billion (approximately $36.7 billion) in interim dividends, signaling robust profitability in the first half of the year and an increasing focus on shareholder returns. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is set to lead the payouts with a distribution of nearly CNY 54 billion.
State-Owned Giants Drive Payouts
According to data from Wind cited by Investing.com, the planned mid-year distributions are dominated by China's six largest state-owned banks, which collectively account for over CNY 220.98 billion of the total. These institutions also raised their interim dividend payout ratio to 31% from 30% in a move to enhance shareholder value.
Key planned distributions include:
- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC): CNY 53.85 billion
- China Construction Bank (CCB): CNY 52.58 billion
- Agricultural Bank of China (ABC): CNY 45.39 billion
- Bank of China (BOC): CNY 38.34 billion
The trend is also expanding beyond the largest players, with several city and rural commercial banks, including Chengdu Bank and Ruifeng Bank, initiating mid-year dividends for the first time. Ruifeng Bank is scheduled to be the first to distribute its dividend on September 10, 2026.
Diverging Views from Institutional Investors
AdThe dividend announcements come as different classes of institutional investors are taking opposing positions on the banking sector. Long-term capital, such as China's national social security fund and major insurance companies, has been increasing its exposure.
As of the end of the second quarter of 2026, the social security fund held banking shares worth over CNY 251 billion, with its largest single position being a CNY 142.77 billion stake in Agricultural Bank of China. In contrast, a recent report from Huachuang Securities indicated that active equity funds cut their weighting in the banking sector to 1.1% in the second quarter, reportedly the lowest level since 2005.
Sector Performance and Outlook
The commitment to higher dividends is supported by solid financial performance. The 42 A-share listed banks collectively reported a 2.96% year-over-year increase in net profit for the first half of 2026, reaching approximately CNY 1.13 trillion.
After a weak first half, the banking sector index has rebounded since July and is now positive for the year. Analysts suggest that bank stocks offer a compelling combination of high dividend yields and low valuations, making them attractive defensive plays with upside potential tied to China's economic recovery.
