Background

Spanish equities finished Monday's session in negative territory, with the benchmark IBEX 35 index declining as losses in consumer and financial services sectors offset a rally in energy stocks amid surging oil prices.

Market Close Snapshot

The IBEX 35 fell 0.30% at the close in Madrid, according to market data. The decline was broad-based, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones on the Madrid Stock Exchange by 102 to 78, while 29 issues ended the session unchanged.

Weakness was concentrated in the Consumer Services, Financial Services & Real Estate, and Building & Construction sectors, which led the broader market lower.

Sector and Stock Movers

Despite the index's negative close, the energy sector provided a bright spot. Oil and gas firm Repsol was the day's top performer, climbing alongside a sharp increase in crude oil prices. In contrast, travel and renewable energy stocks were among the biggest decliners.
