Hang Seng Index Forms Bear Flag Pattern, Nears Oversold Levels

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is showing signs of continued bearish pressure, with technical analysis pointing to the formation of a bear flag pattern—a signal that often precedes a further move downward. While the dominant trend remains firmly negative, other indicators suggest the sell-off may be nearing short-term exhaustion, creating a complex picture for investors.
Dominant Downtrend Confirmed
The primary risk for the index is a bearish continuation following its recent period of consolidation. This view is supported by several key technical indicators. The index is trading below its 20, 50, and 200-day simple moving averages (SMAs), a formation that signals a strong and established downtrend.
According to an analysis on October 26, 2026, the SuperTrend indicator, a tool used to identify trend direction, remains bearish with a resistance level at HKD 23,554. The Average Directional Index (ADX) reading of 35.18 also confirms the presence of a strong, active downtrend.
Key Levels to Watch
Traders are closely monitoring critical price levels that could determine the index's next major move. A decisive break of these zones could trigger either an acceleration of the downtrend or a significant reversal.
Ad- Critical Support: The recent low of HKD 22,829 serves as the immediate floor. A close below this level could be interpreted as a capitulation event, potentially opening the way for targets near HKD 22,500 or the 127.2% Fibonacci extension level at HKD 21,911.
- Overhead Resistance: The main hurdle for any recovery is the resistance zone between HKD 23,400 and HKD 23,550, which includes the 20-day SMA and the SuperTrend level. A sustained move above this area would be required to challenge the bearish trend.
Signs of Indecision and Exhaustion
Despite the overwhelmingly bearish setup, some indicators suggest that downside momentum is decelerating. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has fallen to 31.12, nearing the oversold threshold of 30. An oversold RSI can sometimes precede a short-term price bounce or mean reversion.
Furthermore, the MACD histogram, while negative, shows that bearish momentum is slowing. The formation of a Doji candlestick pattern on October 26 at HKD 23,106 also points to indecision among traders at the current lows, suggesting a temporary balance between buyers and sellers.
