Asian Stocks Tread Cautiously as Oil Prices Ease from Six-Month Highs

Asian share markets opened with a cautious tone on Monday as oil prices pulled back from six-month highs. Investors are positioning for a pivotal week featuring multiple central bank meetings and a slew of earnings reports from major technology companies that will test the recent AI-driven rally.
Oil Prices Retreat on Diplomatic Efforts
Brent crude futures slipped 1.0% to $115.48 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures fell 1.1% to $102.08, according to a Reuters report. The pullback was linked to reports that Qatari mediators were in Tehran as part of a U.S.-coordinated effort to de-escalate regional tensions.
This marks a reversal from last week when Brent surged 6.2% to its highest weekly close since mid-2022. That rally was driven by concerns over energy supplies following Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia, the report noted.
Markets Brace for Central Banks and Tech Earnings
The cautious sentiment was reflected across regional equity markets. Japan's Nikkei fell 0.8%, South Korea's index dipped 0.4%, and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.1%.
Investors are looking ahead to a week packed with monetary policy decisions and crucial earnings. While the U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan are expected to hold rates steady, New Zealand’s central bank is widely anticipated to deliver a hike on Wednesday. Markets are currently pricing in an 80% probability of a Fed rate hike in December.
AdAI Hype Faces Earnings Test
A significant test for market confidence will come from the quarterly results of so-called "hyperscalers," with about one-third of S&P 500 companies scheduled to report. These results are seen as a crucial barometer for investor enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence.
Key earnings to watch include:
- Alphabet (GOOGL): Consensus revenue forecast is $128 billion.
- Microsoft (MSFT): Consensus revenue is $90.6 billion.
- Amazon (AMZN): Consensus revenue is $202 billion.
Other Market Indicators
In the U.S. bond market, yields on 10-year Treasuries stood at 5.0%, off a recent peak of 5.36%. In currency markets, the Japanese yen held its safe-haven appeal at 157.00 per dollar, while the euro was steady at $1.1204. Gold was slightly firmer at $4,001 an ounce after falling more than 4% last week.
