Gold Prices Retreat From Two-Month High on Profit-Taking

Summary
Gold prices fell on Thursday as investors cashed in on recent gains that were driven by softer U.S. inflation data, which had tempered expectations for further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.
Gold prices retreated from a two-month high on Thursday as investors took profits after a rally spurred by signs of cooling U.S. inflation. The pullback reflects a consolidation in the market after weaker economic data bolstered the non-yielding asset by lowering expectations for future interest rate hikes.
Market Reassesses After Inflation Data
As of 9:22 AM ET, spot gold was down 0.4%, according to a report from Investing.com. Gold futures contracts also declined by 0.4%. The precious metal had briefly climbed to its highest level in nearly two months on Wednesday, buoyed by fresh U.S. economic reports.
Data released this week showed that the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) slowed to an annual rate of 3.4% in the 12 months through July, down from 3.5%. A separate report on Thursday indicated that producer prices were flat month-over-month in July. These figures have led investors to temper bets on further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve.
Fed Outlook and Investor Sentiment
The softer inflation readings directly impacted market expectations for Fed policy. The probability of a rate hike at the central bank's September meeting fell to approximately 36%, down from 46% prior to the CPI data release, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
AdInvestors are now looking ahead to the Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole symposium later this month for further clues on the path of interest rates. Higher borrowing costs typically weigh on gold, which does not offer a yield. According to Max Baecker, President of American Hartford Gold, less forward guidance from the Fed makes gold's outlook "more dependent on every new data point" and could trigger greater volatility, Investing.com reported.
Broader Market Factors
A slight weakening in the U.S. dollar provided some underlying support for the metal, making it less expensive for buyers holding other currencies. Baecker also noted that demand for gold is broadening as buyers hedge against structural risks, with central bank purchases, particularly from China, remaining a key supportive factor.
Meanwhile, geopolitical uncertainty and its impact on oil prices are also influencing gold through their effect on inflation and interest rate expectations, Baecker added.
